First Actuarial analysis on USS benefits: response points for employers

9 Sep 2019

On 3 September the University and College Union (UCU) published analysis carried out by First Actuarial, which claimed that the typical USS member is '£240,000 worse off compared to 2011'.

The below document contains a set of paragraphs for employers to use in response to this claim. It makes the case that using the £240k figure as a pretext for industrial action over pensions is irresponsible without including further information on the wider financial realities since 2011, including the fact that the cost of providing defined benefit pensions has risen.
